Every child deserves the chance to imagine what they might become. A teacher, a healthcare professional, an artist, an entrepreneur, or something they haven't discovered yet. For children growing up in poverty, opportunity is not always a given. Access to healthcare, nutritious food, education, safe places to learn and play, and eventually the skills needed to find meaningful work can all be harder to reach. And when those opportunities are limited during childhood, the effects can follow a young person into adulthood. Children International exists to change that.
Crafting Wellness with Children International
Children International is a global child and youth development organization built around a simple idea that ending generational poverty begins by investing in children. Rather than addressing one need at one moment, the organization supports children and youth throughout some of the most formative years of their lives. Its programs bring together health and wellness, education, social-emotional development, empowerment, life skills and employment preparation to help young people build their own paths forward.
In Zambia, those needs can be deeply interconnected. Children International reports that many children and families face barriers to comprehensive healthcare and dental care, while malnutrition can affect childhood development. An understaffed and underfunded education system can make it difficult for children who fall behind to catch up, and limited employment opportunities can create another barrier as young people enter adulthood.
A Place to Learn, Grow and Belong
In Zambia, Children International operates community centers where children and youth can find resources that may otherwise be difficult to access.
There are tutoring programs and educational supplies to help children learn. Nutrition education helps families make healthier choices with the resources available to them. Young people can participate in programs that build social, financial and employment skills as they prepare for adulthood. And perhaps just as importantly, these centers give children safe spaces surrounded by people invested in their future.
The needs change as children grow. A young child may need healthcare, nutrition and help beginning their education. A teenager may need mentorship, confidence and opportunities to explore what comes next. A young adult may need practical skills and support entering the workforce.
Children International's long-term approach recognizes that each stage matters, and that opportunity can build upon opportunity.

Health Is Part of the Foundation
For children to explore those possibilities, they first need the opportunity to grow up healthy.
Children International's work in Zambia includes helping families and local health clinics improve access to and quality of healthcare. And increasingly, that work is reaching beyond its community centers to strengthen healthcare access across underserved communities.
Children International Zambia has established partnerships with the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ) and Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS), working alongside Zambia's Ministry of Health and others to reach communities where geography and limited resources can make accessing healthcare especially difficult.
The broader effort includes strengthening primary and maternal healthcare services and improving last-mile delivery of essential medicines, medical supplies and equipment to public and faith-based health facilities serving vulnerable communities.
It Takes a Community
Children International's work is possible because of a much larger community: local staff and volunteers, families, healthcare professionals, educators, sponsors, donors, government agencies and nonprofit organizations each contributing something different.
This latest healthcare initiative in Zambia brought Children International into the Crafting Wellness community through International Medical Corps, another organization connected to the program.
A World of Possibility
At the heart of Children International's work is child sponsorship. Sponsorship helps provide children and youth with access to the programs, people and resources designed to support them as they grow. From healthcare and educational assistance to safe community spaces, mentors, life skills and employment preparation.
Sponsors can get to know the child they sponsor through letters, photos and updates, following their journey as they grow, learn and begin imagining a future of their own.
The support extends beyond a single child. By investing in programs, community centers, local staff and resources, Children International works to strengthen the environment surrounding children and families as well. It's a model built not simply around helping children through poverty, but helping give them the tools and opportunities to create their own path beyond it.
Wellness as a Commitment
Our Crafting Wellness initiative is a core expression of what we believe: that health is a fundamental right, that the people and animals who need care most are often the ones hardest to reach, and that a company with resources has a responsibility to use them. Across more than 807 missions in 73+ countries, MDF has donated over 45,000 instruments to organizations working on the front lines of global health.
