The Power of Listening: Expanding Cardiac Education in Rwanda

Nurses participating in Rheumatic Heart Disease training in Rwanda, where education, early detection, and access to quality diagnostic tools are helping strengthen cardiovascular care in underserved communities.
Some of the most meaningful changes in healthcare begin with something simple: listening. For nurses and physicians caring for patients in remote communities, the ability to recognize an abnormal heart or lung sound can make all the difference. It can lead to earlier intervention, better treatment decisions, and improved outcomes for the people who need it most.
Crafting Wellness with Rotary International Lander, Wyoming Club
That's why MDF Instruments was honored to support the work of Dr. Maria Kidner, DNP, FNP-BC, APRN, FAANP, the Rotary International Lander, Wyoming Club, Team Heart, and healthcare leaders across Rwanda as they work to expand cardiovascular education and strengthen patient care.
A Partnership Rooted in Purpose
Through this partnership, 220 MDF Acoustica® Stethoscopes were placed in the hands of nurses and physicians participating in specialized cardiac education programs throughout Rwanda.
Designed by cardiac nurse practitioner Dr. Maria Kidner, the program is the result of years of research, collaboration, and a shared commitment to reducing the burden of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in underserved communities.
Following a successful pilot program in 2023, educational materials and training resources were developed specifically for healthcare professionals serving communities throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Working alongside Team Heart and the Rwanda Biomedical Center, the initiative continues to grow with a shared goal of improving the early recognition and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Listening Beyond Borders
At the heart of the program is a focus on Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), a preventable condition that continues to affect communities throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
The nurse-led education program teaches healthcare professionals how to identify and treat streptococcal infections before they progress into more serious heart complications. It also equips nurses with the skills to recognize the early signs of Rheumatic Heart Disease through physical assessment and auscultation.
For a child with an untreated strep infection, early recognition can mean the difference between a temporary illness and a lifelong heart condition. By helping nurses identify and treat these infections sooner, the program is working to prevent disease before it starts, protecting not only individual patients, but future generations as well.
For Dr. Kidner, choosing the right stethoscope was an important part of that mission. "I chose the MDF Acoustica stethoscope because I feel strongly that nurses need a good-quality scope to be able to hear normal versus abnormal heart and lung sounds."
In many rural clinics, healthcare professionals must make critical decisions with limited resources. When advanced diagnostic equipment isn't available, a trained ear, a quality stethoscope, and a careful clinical assessment can become some of the most powerful tools in the room.
In some communities, nurses must rely on clinical assessment alone to diagnose streptococcal infections, making tools as simple as a penlight and stethoscope invaluable resources.
Empowering Nurses, Strengthening Communities
What makes this initiative especially impactful is its focus on empowering nurses.
By providing education, practical skills, and reliable diagnostic tools, the program helps healthcare professionals become more confident in identifying potential concerns early and connecting patients with appropriate treatment.
The impact extends far beyond the healthcare professionals who attend the training. Every nurse equipped with new knowledge and resources has the potential to improve care for countless patients and families throughout their community. As that knowledge is shared, practiced, and passed on, its reach continues to grow.
The program has already provided education to nurses in five district hospitals, but the vision extends much further. Rwanda has more than 35 district hospitals, along with provincial, national, and private healthcare facilities that could benefit from this training.
The Heart of the Mission
Working with Team Heart and the Rwanda Biomedical Center, leaders are developing a national rollout plan to expand access to cardiac education throughout Rwanda.
The work is also creating opportunities beyond Rwanda's borders. As the program continues to evolve, plans are underway to expand this model to additional countries, including Zambia, helping more healthcare professionals gain the skills and resources needed to improve patient outcomes in their communities.
At its core, this initiative is about building sustainable systems of care. Rather than providing a short-term solution, the goal is to equip local healthcare professionals with knowledge that will continue benefiting patients, families, and communities for generations to come.

Wellness as a Commitment, Not a Campaign
Our Crafting Wellness initiative is a reflection of what we believe: that health is a fundamental right and that access to quality healthcare should not depend on geography.
