What happens when a medical mission ends? For U-VOL Foundation, the answer is at the heart of the work. For more than a decade, U-VOL Foundation has worked to address healthcare disparities by building relationships with communities, healthcare professionals, and organizations around the world. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a global organization centered on medical outreach, health education, clean water and sanitation, women’s empowerment, and sustainable healthcare initiatives.

Crafting Wellness with U-VOL Foundation

U-VOL is preparing to return to Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, with a goal that extends beyond the patients its team will treat. The upcoming medical mission is designed to meet immediate healthcare needs while strengthening the people and systems that will continue providing care long after the mission is over.

Returning to Benue State

During its upcoming mission in Makurdi, U-VOL Foundation plans to provide direct healthcare services to approximately 1,000–1,300 people, bringing together medical professionals and local partners to help close some of these gaps. Patients will have access to general medical care, pediatric services, eye care, and women's health services, along with essential medications and medical supplies.

The team expects to screen, assess, and provide care for a range of healthcare needs, including hypertension, cardiac conditions, diabetes, malaria, typhoid and parasitic infections, respiratory and ENT infections, gynecological conditions, cataracts, and pediatric and infant health needs.

Maternal health will also be an important focus, with antenatal care, basic obstetric assessments, screenings, and health education available to women in the community.

Outreach efforts will extend care to vulnerable populations, including internally displaced persons (IDP) communities, helping reach people who may otherwise face significant barriers to healthcare.

Knowledge That Stays Behind

One of the most powerful tools in healthcare isn't something you can pack into a medical bag. It's knowledge.

Alongside direct patient care, U-VOL plans to provide capacity-building education for local nurses, midwives, and physicians. Training will include Helping Babies Breathe (HBB), basic emergency response and patient safety, and best practices in maternal and neonatal care.

By investing in the healthcare professionals already serving these communities, the impact of a medical mission can continue to multiply. A nurse who strengthens their emergency response skills can apply that knowledge to future patients. A midwife trained in neonatal care can carry those skills into future births. A healthcare team equipped with additional knowledge and resources can continue strengthening care within its own community.

U-VOL works alongside local clinics, hospitals, healthcare officials, and community partners to support continuity of care and build solutions around the needs of the communities themselves.

Building Health Beyond the Clinic

U-VOL's work recognizes the many factors that influence whether individuals and communities can stay healthy in the first place. Its programs extend into health education, clean water and sanitation, preventive health, and women's empowerment.

Through health education, communities receive practical information about prevention, nutrition, hygiene, maternal health, and chronic disease. U-VOL's clean water and sanitation initiatives address another fundamental part of community health by improving access to safe water, sanitation infrastructure, and hygiene education.

Their ValueHer initiative places additional focus on women and maternal health, including education, maternal care, support for rural clinics, and training for nurses and midwives.

A Partnership Built Over Time

MDF Instruments is proud to have supported U-VOL Foundation through Crafting Wellness for several years. Our relationship with U-VOL has previously taken us to this same region of Nigeria. During an earlier medical mission in Benue State, MDF Instruments provided stethoscopes and sphygmomanometers that U-VOL's healthcare teams used while caring for patients in underserved communities.

Read the story from U-VOL's earlier Benue State medical mission.

Today, we're honored to continue following the work of an organization that shares a belief at the center of Crafting Wellness: meaningful change happens when people work together.

Medical instruments can help a healthcare professional listen, assess, measure, and make informed decisions. But their greatest impact comes from the hands they're placed in— the nurses, physicians, midwives, volunteers, and local healthcare professionals who turn those tools into care.

Wellness as a Commitment

Our Crafting Wellness initiative is a core expression of what we believe: that health is a fundamental right, that the people and animals who need care most are often the ones hardest to reach, and that a company with resources has a responsibility to use them. Across more than 807 missions in 73+ countries, MDF has donated over 45,000 instruments to organizations working on the front lines of global health.
